Best DAW
The best DAW is Ableton Live 12 Standard for electronic music, FL Studio for beats, and Logic Pro for writing and recording songs on a Mac. REAPER is the best value on any platform at $60. Pro Tools Studio handles the biggest recording sessions, Bitwig Studio suits sound design, and Fender Studio Pro 8 suits guitar-driven songs.
A DAW (digital audio workstation) is the program you record and mix in. Each one lays out a song differently, so pick the workflow first and the brand second.
Picks by genre and workflow
Pick by the music you make, since each DAW is built around a different way of starting a song. If you make beats, start with the FL Studio and Ableton rows. If you write and record songs, start with Logic (Mac only), Studio Pro, and REAPER. Prices are the makers' listed prices at the time of writing.
| You make | Best DAW | Why | Listed price |

Workflow: clips, patterns or a timeline
Every DAW records and mixes. Where they differ is how they lay out a song, and there are three basic ways. The one that matches how you think decides how fast an idea turns into a track.
Clip grid
Live, Bitwig
Loops sit in a grid of tracks and scenes. Great for jamming out ideas and playing live.
Patterns
FL Studio
The Playlist holds pattern, audio, and automation clips. Best for loop-based beats.
Timeline
Logic, Pro Tools, REAPER
Takes run left to right. Best for singers, bands, and long takes.

The 7 DAWs
For each one: who it's for, what sets it apart, and the wall you'll hit first.
Ableton Live 12 Standard
Live Standard is the pick for electronic producers and anyone who wants to perform. Ableton's edition table gives Standard unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, 13 instruments, 42 audio effects, and 38 GB of sounds. Intro caps you at 16 tracks.
- Suite adds 20 instruments, 58 audio effects, and 71 GB of sounds, or you can rent-to-own it at $31.21 a month.
- After the 30-day trial you can still open your sets, but you can't save or export them.
FL Studio
FL Studio is for hip hop and beat producers. Image-Line says every edition gets "all future updates free," and the current release is FL Studio 2026 for Windows and macOS.
- Buy Producer at $179. The edition comparison shows audio recording starts there, and upgrading later costs only the difference between editions.
- The catch: Fruity Edition can't record vocals or guitar. If you'll ever track a voice over your beats, skip it.
Logic Pro
Logic Pro is for songwriters who record and produce on a Mac. Apple lists Session Players for drums, bass, and keys, Stem Splitter, Mastering Assistant, and Flex Pitch, at $199.99 once or inside Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 a month or $129 a year.
- If you're outgrowing GarageBand, Logic opens GarageBand projects directly, with tracks, tempo, and key carried over.
- It needs a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 15.6 or later.
Pro Tools Studio
Pro Tools Studio is for big sessions, like a full band or a drum kit with a pile of mics. Avid's tier comparison gives Studio 512 audio tracks and 64 simultaneous inputs, against Artist's 32 tracks and 16 inputs.
- Comes with 130+ plugins, and Melodyne 5 essential and iZotope RX 11 Spectral Editor come with Artist and up.
- The catch: it's a subscription at $34.99 a month, the most expensive route here over three years.
REAPER
REAPER is for anyone who wants a full DAW for the least money. Cockos sells one version with "no artificial limitations" for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it takes VST, VST3, AU, CLAP, and LV2 plugins.
- $60 discounted or $225 commercial, with updates through version 8.99 and a 60-day full evaluation.
- The discounted license only covers personal use or revenue under $20,000 a year.
Bitwig Studio
Bitwig Studio is for sound designers and modular synth nerds. Bitwig's store gives every edition unlimited tracks, but only the full Studio edition adds The Grid, 188 instruments and effects, and 43 modulators.
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, per bitwig.com.
- The price covers updates released in the next 12 months.
Fender Studio Pro 8
Fender Studio Pro 8 is for guitarists and bands. It's the new name for PreSonus Studio One Pro, and Fender's launch release says its Mustang and Rumble plugins add 57 guitar and bass amp models.
- Runs on macOS 13 or later, Windows 10 or 11, and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as a public beta, per Fender's system requirements.
- Support for Windows 10 and macOS 13 ends December 31, 2026.
How to choose
Once you know your genre, four things settle it: platform, inputs, license, and whether it records audio.
- Platform. Logic is Mac only. REAPER and Bitwig also run on Linux, and Studio Pro has a Linux beta.
- Inputs and tracks. Count your mics. A band recording 16 inputs at once fits Pro Tools Artist; more than that needs Studio.
- License. FL Studio updates are free for life, REAPER's run through version 8.99, and Bitwig's run 12 months.
- Audio recording. FL Studio Fruity can't record audio; every other tier on this page can.
