Editorial Policy
This page explains how pages on Home Recording Book are researched and written, which sources count, and what the site does and doesn't take money for. If a page breaks one of these rules, tell us at mark@homerecordingbook.com.
Sources we use
Every fact is checked against its source when the page is written, and linked in the sentence that makes the claim. If a claim can't be checked, it's cut. These are the sources that count:
- Manufacturer product pages, manuals, spec sheets, and support articles
- Standards bodies such as AES, ASTM, ISO, ANSI, ITU, and EBU
- Government agencies such as OSHA, NIOSH, CDC, and NIST
- Universities, nonprofits, and published research
Sources we don't use
Forums, Reddit, Quora, YouTube, retailers, affiliate review sites, trade blogs and magazines, cost estimate sites, and other recording sites. Wikipedia can point us to a source, but it's never the source we cite.
How products are picked
Every product we recommend has to be real and current on its maker's site, and its specs come from that maker. Picks are made for a job (one voice, a full band, a small room) based on published specs such as preamp count, self-noise, and absorption ratings. Where a pick is a judgment call rather than a spec, the page says so.
No page claims a test, a measurement, or a recording session that didn't happen. If we add our own recordings or measurements, they'll be labeled as ours.
Prices
Prices change all the time, so pages give a price band ("under $200") or the maker's listed price at the time of writing. Check the current price before you buy. We never link to a retailer.
Money and independence
Home Recording Book has no ads, no affiliate links, and no sponsored content, and no one pays to be on a page. Product links go to the maker's own site, and nobody pays us when you click them.
If that changes, for example by adding affiliate links, this section will be updated first, and each affected page will say so near the top.
Corrections and updates
Each page shows the date it was last updated. When a spec, price band, or product changes, or a reader sends a correction with a source, the page is fixed and the date moves. Send corrections to mark@homerecordingbook.com with the page address and the source.
