How to Record Vocals in Ableton

QuestionRecording how-toUpdated

To record vocals in Ableton Live, create an audio track, set Audio From to Ext. In, and pick the one input your mic is on. Arm the track, set Monitor to Auto, then hit the Arrangement Record button. All of this follows the Live 12 manual.

Set up the vocal track

  1. Show the I/O section. Create an audio track and turn on In/Out in the View menu's Mixer Controls (Ctrl+Alt+I on Windows, Ctrl+Option+I on Mac), per Live 12's routing chapter.
  2. Pick one mono input. Set Audio From to Ext. In, then choose the channel your mic is plugged into, say 1. Per the manual, a mono input makes the track record mono samples.
  3. Arm and monitor. Click the track's Arm button and set Monitor to Auto. You'll hear the input while the track is armed and not playing clips.
  4. Set gain. Set interface gain on your loudest line. Peak targets are in how loud should you record vocals.
  5. Add a count-in. It's in the pull-down next to the Metronome switch. Live won't start recording until the count-in finishes, per Live 12's recording chapter.

Session vs Arrangement recording

Arrangement View records onto a fixed song timeline. Session View records clips that "can be played at any time and in any order," as Live 12's Session View chapter puts it. Tab flips between them, per Live 12's concepts chapter.

To comp in Arrangement, show take lanes with Ctrl+Alt+U (Windows) or Cmd+Option+U (Mac), select the best phrase, and press Enter to copy it to the main lane, per Live 12's comping chapter.

Why can't I hear myself when recording vocals in Ableton?

Check that the track is armed and its Monitor switch is on Auto or In. Auto stops monitoring while the track is playing clips, and Off turns input monitoring off completely.

Should I record vocals in Session View or Arrangement View?

Use Arrangement View for full lead vocals, since it records along the song timeline and stacks loop passes as takes. Use Session View for short loops and ad libs you want to launch as clips.
